Screen-Free Activities for Each Age and Stage

A practical list of screen-free activity ideas broken out by age band, from 18 months through to 12 years.

18 Months to 3 Years

At this age, simple sensory and practical activities hold attention best: pouring water between containers, sorting objects by colour, stacking and knocking down blocks, a basket of fabric scraps to feel and sort, tearing paper into a bowl.

3 to 6 Years

Slightly more structured independent work fits well here: a simple puzzle, threading beads onto string, a tray-based practical life activity, drawing with a limited set of materials, a matching game with picture cards, water play with cups and funnels outdoors.

6 to 9 Years

Longer, more complex activities suit this range: a simple sewing or craft project followed through to completion, a board or card game with real rules, building with more advanced construction sets, a nature journal with drawings and notes, a short cooking task with supervision.

9 to 12 Years

Independent, longer-horizon projects work well: a multi-day building or research project, a journal or creative writing habit, learning a skill from a physical book or a knowledgeable adult, an outdoor project like a small garden bed, organising and running a simple family game night.

The Point Isn't to Fill Every Minute

None of this is about eliminating all downtime — unstructured boredom has its own value. These are starting points for when a genuinely screen-free, engaging option is wanted, not a schedule meant to occupy every waking hour.
