Why mental math practice should build a feel for how numbers relate before it teaches shortcuts — and how to tell the difference at home.

A Trick Without Understanding Doesn't Transfer

A child taught a fast method for multiplying two-digit numbers can look impressively quick — right up until they meet a problem the trick doesn't cover, and have nothing to fall back on. Mental mathematics done well builds an underlying sense of how numbers relate, so a child can reason their way through unfamiliar problems, not just recall a memorised procedure.

What Number Sense Actually Looks Like

A child with strong number sense can tell you, without calculating exactly, that 48 + 39 is close to 90. They notice that 25 is a quarter of 100. They can break 7 × 8 into pieces they already know (7 × 8 = 7 × 4 × 2) rather than only recalling a memorised fact. That flexibility is the goal — a fast correct answer is a pleasant side effect, not the actual target.

Patterns Before Procedures

Before teaching a method for solving a type of problem, it helps to let a child notice the pattern themselves — laying out a sequence of numbers and asking what they see, rather than immediately explaining the rule. A pattern discovered sticks differently than a rule handed down.

Where a Tool Like an Abacus Fits In

A wooden abacus can be genuinely useful — but as a tactile aid for a child who already has some quantity sense, not a substitute for building that sense in the first place. Reaching for the abacus after struggling to picture a quantity mentally is a reasonable use; using it purely to get the right answer faster, without any accompanying understanding, undercuts the whole point.

A Simple Practice to Try

Pick two numbers under 20 and ask your child to add them without paper — then ask how they did it. The method they describe tells you far more about their number sense than whether the answer was right.
